Where We’re From

"My name is Miguel Portillo. I am 15 years old, and live in Washington, D.C... The place from the past that had a positive impact on my life was my family's home in another country. This was my mother's and grandparents' home in El Salvador. When I was a little kid, I went to El Salvador. I was about 5 years old. When I came to the airport in San Salvador, it took 4 hours to get to Santa Ana where my grandparents live. The memory [that] I have of this place was that the neighborhood was different. All the people were very nice to you. You could sit down and ride on the back of a truck and no one would tell you anything. Kids played soccer on the streets. People grew fresh fruit in the back of their gardens. I listened to traditional music from El Salvador. I felt like I was in a different world. Most importantly, everybody shared different types of food, like fruit, tamales, pupusas and other types of food. People had different traditions that they celebrated. One way this place impacted me was that I learned that people from different places shared different types of food and celebrated their own traditions in different ways.
