DC-CAP is a privately-funded, nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging and enabling DC public and public charter high school students to enroll and graduate from college. In partnership with the DC Public School (DCPS) and DC public charter school systems, DC-CAP provides direct counseling and financial assistance to students who might otherwise never have the opportunity to go to college. The Double the Numbers (DTN) coalition represents an unprecedented commitment by community leaders to ensure that many more DC students succeed in college. DTN hopes to double the numbers of 9th graders who finish high school within five years, enroll in college, and graduate from college in a timely fashion; currently, only 9 percent of our students do so, less than half the national average. Funding for the DTN Coalition ended in July 2012. Family & Youth Initiative (DCFYI) helps teenagers in foster care find adoptive families and make lifelong connections with caring adults. We are a community that gets together for group activities; individual adult-teen matches are made based on connections made at events. The relationships with DCFYI adult volunteers help teens build self-confidence, belief in the future, and belief in themselves. Foster care youth who do not participate with an organization like DCFYI are at particular risk of not completing school because of multiple foster care placements and thus school moves and lack of emotional and educational support. The mission of Food & Friends is to foster a community caring for men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses by preparing and delivering specialized meals and groceries in conjunction with nutrition counseling. The afterschool program at Food & Friends meets weekly to perform primarily administrative tasks geared toward preparing students for work with the basic skills many jobs require. On average, 95 percent of scholars who complete Higher Achievement advance to top academic high school programs and 93 percent advance to college. United Way of the National Capital Area (UWNCA) manages one of the largest annual workplace fundraising campaigns in the country. Our community support system includes over 730 member charities with access to hundreds of work sites and tens of thousands of donors and volunteers. Our three major focus areas are health, financial stability, and education. With education, the goal is to increase on-time high school graduation rates and help students transition to post-secondary schooling and training. UWNCA is a key stakeholder in the Raise DC cradle-to-career initiative that aligns the work of schools, nonprofit service providers, and government agencies to keep kids on track for graduation.
